One Middle Village couple has found the secret to make love last a very long time. Maria and Salvatore D’Angelo have a love story that spans decades—they will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this July—and one of their secrets for such a longlasting love is spontaneity. Being spontaneous is very important to Salvatore. “We do things in a sporadic way most of the time,” he said. “He doesn’t wait until Valentine’s to bring me flowers,” Maria added. “He brings me flowers whenever the mood strikes him.” The D’Angelos do not always make plans, they love the spur-of-the-moment ideas that take them on adventures. There is “not too much planning,” Salvatore said. Salvatore may walk down the avenue and pick out flowers for Maria on any day of the week. “To me that is Valentine’s. Everyday is like that,” Maria said. Salvatore and Maria’s story together has a very spontaneous beginning. Maria and Salvatore emigrated from separate parts of Italy when they were younger, and both ended up living in Ridgewood when they arrived in the United States. One evening, Salvatore’s girlfriend at the time stood him up for a dance. He asked a co-worker, who happened to be a neighbor of Maria’s, if he would be able to bring Maria instead. “My parents were very strict. We weren’t allowed to go out without a chaperone,” Maria said. Her parents agreed to let her go if her neighbor joined them for a double date. After a successful first date, Maria and Salvatore began going on dates regularly, and on Christmas 1963, Salvatore asked Maria to date exclusively. By July of 1964, Salvatore proposed to Maria, and in July of 1965 they were married. At the time of their marriage, Maria was 21 years-old and Salvatore was 25 years-old. Almost 50 years later their love is as strong as ever. “I’m married 49 years and I still look forward to seeing him,” Maria said. Although they have found what works for them, “love is individualized,” Salvatore said. “Not everybody works the same, so you can’t really say love is the same.” Salvatore and Maria D’Angelo of Middle Village share their secrets to a happy love-filled marriage. The D’Angelos do have one thing planned: they will be having two parties to celebrate their golden anniversary, one with family and the other at the Peter Cardella Senior Citizen Center with all of their friends. Be spontaneous with love, keep things fresh and always have a surprise, and according to the D’Angelos, love can last forever. CK Students Get Training In Forensics The Christ the King High School forensic science class participated in Locard’s Principle Activity. Students at the Middle Village institution spent the day wearing white t-shirts and then performed forensic testing and analysis. ©Times Newsweekly - 2015 - STJOHNSCHUR
