In addition to a goal of collecting 50 units of blood to donate to theAmerican Red Cross, the club hopes to raise awareness among fellow students about the benefits of blood donation. “We hope some students will become lifelong donors,” Hensel explained. “We also hope to establish this as an annual event at the high school.” The Red Cross Club was founded when Maspeth High School was first established nearly four years ago. “We are led by a group of dedicated students,” Hensel stated, “Our president and vice president for the past three years are seniors Mateo Osorio and Joshua Vasquez. We currently have between 30 to 40 core members. The goals from the outset were to help the community in a meaningful way.” Community service and collaboration is key to the club’s mission. “The American Red Cross Club of Maspeth High School will learn, practice and exemplify humanitarian values through youth service projects and partnerships with other community groups,” stated Hensel. “During the past two years, when I’ve been the advisor for the club, we have been focused on getting our members CPR and First Aid certified. We had eight students CPR and First Aid certified and hope to expand that number this year.” In addition to the blood drive, the Red Cross Club has participated in various fundraising efforts on both a local and global scale. “Last year, we raised over $2,000 for the Philippines Relief Fund,” Hensel added. “We have hosted bake sales and movie nights at the school to raise money Members of the Maspeth High School Red Cross Club gave the gift of life at their blood drive. for the CPR certification and theAmerican Red Cross. We have also partnered with other student groups such as the Key Club to raise awareness and money for their causes.” According to Hensel, The American Red Cross is offering certain incentives to students who participate in events such as Wednesday’s blood drive at the high school.
