Remember when we were over the
moon with excitement from the “I Love
New York” ad campaign which boasted
the attractions of the Big Apple?”
Well Mayor Bill de Blasio is bringing
back the music with a galaxy of stars to
cheer a “We Love NYC: Homecoming
Concert” at Central Park’s Great Lawn
this Saturday.
The two-term mayor of the city
wants to send a message in a big way
that the once maligned epicenter of
COVID-19 has regained the vibrancy it
was revered prior to the pandemic.
“This is going to be a historic, monumental
moment for all New Yorkers and
all Americans,” he said last month.
“You don’t want to miss this,” Mayor
de Blasio added.
In planning for the marathon music
event reportedly he tapped music
mogul Clive Davis to rally some of the
most iconic names of the entertainment
industry for the culmination of
a week-long celebration of the city’s
recovery from quarantine and high
infection rates.
Davis, renowned for launching the
careers of Whitney Houston, Bruce
Springsteen, Barry Manilow, Alicia
Keys and others culled a roster of
super-stars which included Springsteen,
Patti Smith, Manilow, Simon and
Garfunkel, Jennifer Hudson, LL Cool
J, Andrea Boccelli, Wyclef Jean, Earth
Wind & Fire, Carlos Santana, Gayle
King, Cynthia Errivo, The New York
Philharmonic, Journey, Jimmy Fallon,
Jon Batiste, Elvis Costello, Kenneth
“Babyface” Edmonds and others.
They will exalt the wonders of New
York, laud its comeback and demonstrate
to the rest of the nation that its
successful 70 percent vaccinations are
the reasons for the low infection and
hospitalization rate now registered.
Slated to start at 5 p.m. the event
will be broadcast on CNN and follows a
weeklong series of free concerts across
the boroughs dubbed “It’s Time For
Hip-Hop.”
Organized by the Universal Hip Hop
Museum, Big Daddy Kane, Ghostface
Killah, Kool Moe Dee, George Clinton
and the P-Funk All-Stars are among
the headliners.
The Bronx kicked off the first of four
concerts on Monday which billed KTSOne,
Slick Rick, Busy Bee, Remy Ma
and others at Orchard Beach.
Staten Island slates EPMD, Crystal
Waters, Force MDs, Rob Base and
others at Richmond County Bank on
Tuesday; followed by Brooklyn’s Army
Terminal stellar lineup of C&C Music
Factory, Special Ed, Stetsasonic, Sweet
Sensation, Big Daddy Kane, Maino,
Papoose, Popmaster Fable, Desiigner
and still more on Thursday.
On Friday, Queens Forest Stadium
will fill with fans of hip-hop who recall
the hey-days of Mob Deep, Yo-Yo, Too
$hort, DJ Wiz, EPMD and the Funkateers
favorites, George Clinton and the
P-Funk All-Stars.
All shows are slated to begin at 4 pm
and end at 9:30 p.m.
Patrons must show proof of vaccinations
against Covid-19.
Those exempted due to disability
will receive “reasonable accommodation.”
For sure, performers and fans will
reclaim the pre-pandemic braggadocio
of NewYork, New York, the American
City “so nice you have to say it twice.”
