PPP declared winner as focus
turns to Trinidad & Tobago
By Bert Wilkinson
Guyana’s Indo-dominated
People’s Progressive Party (PPP)
officially took power from the
previous multiparty coalition on
Sunday, making it the second
such party to take the reins of
government in the Caribbean
Community as a third possibility
looms in Trinidad with polls set
for Monday.
And if the United National
Congress (UNC) triumphs over
the Afro-supported People’s
National Movement (PNM) in
Trinidad, serious political history
would have been made as
it would be the first time that
the three most resource rich
nations in the 15-member trade
bloc would be in the control of
Indo Caribbean parties simultaneously.
Suriname’s Hindustani
dominated VHP party won the
most seats-20 of 51- in the country’s
May 25 elections and leads a
four-party, multiracial coalition
that is now settling in to revive a
badly ailing economy.
The PPP was declared as
the winner after a brief meeting
of the Elections Commission
(Gecom) on Sunday, using
the tabulated votes from a controversial,
33-day recount that
was monitored by a team from
CARICOM.
But the declaration has left a
bitter taste in the mouths of coalition
supporters as they are adamant
that the polls were marred
by widespread fraud, including
dead and migrated people being
allowed to vote, incidents of ballot
stuffing in almost each of
the 10 regions, ballot boxes with
votes with no supporting documents
instructing recount officials
as to exactly what had transpired
and other alleged irregularities.

Another victory for James in
Trump’s Public Charge Rule
By Nelson A. King
New York Attorney General
Letitia James has secured
another major victory for
Caribbean and other immigrants
across New York and
the rest of the United States
in her lawsuit against the
Trump administration’s Public
Charge Rule.
Trump’s Public Charge
Rule denies green cards and
visas to Caribbean and other
immigrants who the administration
claims are likely to use
government assistance programs
in the future.
James led a coalition —
which includes three states
and New York City — that
on Wednesday obtained a ruling
from the US Court of
Appeals for the Second Circuit
upholding a preliminary
injunction against the rule
that changed the established
meaning of public charge.
“The Second Circuit has
now recognized that the
Trump administration acted
unlawfully in issuing its Public
Charge Rule,” James said.
“The federal government’s
change to this rule was wrong
when it was first issued, long
before the public health crisis
that now plagues the nation.
“Unfortunately, the realities
of the current pandemic
underscore the importance
of this fight, and we remain
committed to delivering justice
for New Yorkers and for
our immigrant neighbors
