HARLEM STAGE VIRTUAL TRIBUTE TO ARTISTS
against the deadly virus.
“In light of the COVID-19
pandemic, I just wanted to
lift the spirits and warm the
hearts of the frontline workers
through a musical rendition,”
said Jamesy P, who
is based in St. Vincent and
the Grenadines but travels
throughout the region for
what he describes as “interactionism
perspective.”
The lyrics of “Capeless
Heroes” go in part: “To every
nurse, every doctor, every soldier,
every essential worker/
TONY award-winning actress LaChanze and award winning actress Tamara Tunie in performance at last year’s gala.
We salute you/Yea, yea/Shout
out to the capeless heroes out
there/Just know we appreciate
you/oh yea/
“Reaching out to the
unsung heroes without fear/
We pray that God protect/Oh
yea/It’s not easy on the frontline/
Caribbean L 24 ife, May 15-21, 2020
You have to put your life
on the line/It’s sticky on the
frontline/Risking your life to
save mine/And you’re working
overtime/To give us peace of
mind/Giving all you got/So
the pieces align/On the frontline/
On the frontline,” James
P sings.
star José James; Harlem Stage
WaterWorks artist, Jason “Timbuktu”
Diakité; and other
musical guests.
The gala will feature special
appearances by MSNBC host
and anchor, Joy Reid; dance
legend Bill T. Jones; stars of
television and film, Claire
Danes, Hugh Dancy and hiphop
pioneer, Fab 5 Freddy; and
star of television and film, Tate
Donovan, among others.
Like so many arts organizations,
especially those dedicated
to serving artists of color
and making their work accessible
to the community, Harlem
Stage said it is facing “economic
challenges like never
before.”
Due to the cancellation
of its annual spring gala, its
most critical fundraiser of the
year, Harlem Stage said it
is facing a “significant revenue
gap” that could undermine
its ability to continue
the mission it has “so proudly
championed for more than 35
years.”
The event can be viewed on
Harlem Stage’s Facebook and
Instagram channels.
Harlem Stage said donations
are welcome to ensure its continued
existence and ability to
“discover, support and commission
works by visionary
artists of color, and present
those works at low, or no cost,
to the community.”
“The closure of performing
arts venues due to COVID-19
has been difficult for artists,
administrators, stakeholders
and for audiences,” said
Patricia Cruz, Harlem State’s
executive director.
“This online celebration
will showcase our mission to
a wider audience and, hopefully,
raise the critical funds
needed to continue to support
visionary artists of color
whose daring works inspire
and uplift our community
and our world,” she added.

Caribbean carnivals in UK cancelled
strong carnival family, it is
important to recognize that
the sector is resilient, and
Caribbean carnival arts will
return when this global crisis
settles down.
“We continue to work with
our regional carnival partners
through EMCCAN and Arts
Council England, and our
Local Authority Leicester City
Council, local audiences and
businesses in Leicester, who
have shown their ongoing
support through this difficult
time,” Christopher added.
The carnival committee is
working with carnival committees
in Nottingham, Derby
and Northampton to produce
a combined “online” carnival
experience,” said LeicestershireLive,
adding that Leicester
Caribbean Carnival may
stage a winter street parade
though the city later in the
year.
“Other Caribbean carnivals
around the UK are also being
affected, but we are looking
into alternative ways of delivering
an exciting carnival arts
program for people at home to
enjoy,” Christopher said.
“We look forward to welcoming
you to our next carnival
and thank you for your
invaluable support,” he added.
“Stay safe.”
The Buxton Advertiser also
said on Wednesday that the
Caribbean carnival parade
and outdoor film screenings
have been cancelled in Derby
amid coronavirus lockdown.
The Caribbean Carnival
parade in Derby was expected
to take place from the city
center to Osmaston Park, on
July 19, the Advertiser said.
