CARICOM health officials have
real cause for concern
By Bert Wilkinson
Health officials in the Caribbean
Community now have real
cause for concern as the number
of corona virus cases skyrocket
across the region with Trinidad
leading the way with 57 confirmed
patients up to Wednesday
and with the number of cases
also jumping up in the Eastern
Caribbean sub grouping.
Facing certain short term
economic ruin from shuttered
air and seaports, reduced passenger
traffic, the closure of hotels,
cruise ship cancellations and
a string of other economic sad
stories, some governments like
St. Lucia and The Bahamas are
either considering enhanced or
total lockdowns of countries to
contain the spread of the Covid
19 disease.
In the case of Trinidad where
the number of confirmed cases
is rising daily, authorities are
coming under severe flak for preventing
small groups of nationals
from returning home, arguing
that airports are closed but
opposition legislators have blasted
authorities for allowing a special
flight to land that took out
stranded British nationals.
Minister of Security, Stuart
Young is, however, adamant
that those who are overseas in
places like Barbados, Venezuela
and North America will have to
remain for the while as most
of the twin island’s confirmed
cases came from people who
went abroad, from cruise ships
or from persons who had visited
countries where the virus was
rampant.
