BULLIES

Health, Jeff Bostic. “We have engaged
the nurses from Cuba. Barbados had
diplomatic relations with Cuba when
other countries were trying to do the
same and we are not going to buckle
under the pressure of any other
nation.”
He said the tourism dependent island
is “friends of all, satellites of none. Barbados
is a sovereign country and we
make decisions in the interest of our
country just like other countries large
and small, make all of their decisions in
the interest of their countries.”
Prime Minister of Antigua, Gaston
Browne has also lashed out against the
bill that blames the Cuban government
for profiting from the trafficking of its
own medical personnel, noting that “we
are not involved in any form of human
trafficking and for USA officials to suggest
that by virtue of us employing the
services of Cuban professionals that
is a form of forced labor and therefore
human trafficking. That is not true. We
do not accept that.”
US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo
said a week ago that the US government
was adamant that the nurses export
Caribbean L 12 ife, JULY 24-30, 2020
scheme was tantamount to trafficking,
noting that “up to 50,000 Cuban
doctors have been forced by the Castro
regime into human trafficking situations
in more than 60 countries. They
are the regime’s number one source of
income.”
Most governments are quick to point
out that the United States has not on
the other hand offered any professional
help to the region and if it did, countries
would have accepted in much the
same way that they did for Cuba.
The political toss up comes as
authorities in Guyana have in recent
days confirmed a decision to turn down
a request from Washington to set up
an American radio station in Guyana’s
northwestern border region to broadcast
hostile programs to neighboring
Venezuela.

be set aside for youth aging out of foster
care, formerly incarcerated individuals,
and formerly homeless young adults.
The governor said the on-site supportive
services offered by CAMBA will
be supplemented by an extensive network
of benefits available to the larger
community in the development’s
30,000-square-foot “HUB”.
He said many of the Community
HUB’s facilities will be open to the
public and help encourage community
engagement.
Cuomo said resources available at
the HUB include: Childcare services;
health screening center; small business
services incubator and workforce training;
violence prevention and mediation
center; youth education and development
center; technology training
center that includes adult education
and financial literacy classes; recording
and rehearsal studio, and performance
space; full-sized basketball court for
general community use and access,
competitive basketball leagues, and
community events; food pantry and
café; and design studio and exhibition
space.
The HUB will be named for and
dedicated to the memory of Dr. Roy A.
Hastick, “a gifted, caring and visionary
business leader who passed away from
COVID-19 in April,” Cuomo said.
“Dr. Hastick devoted his time to the
health of the community in Brooklyn
and the Caribbean Diaspora, founding
the Caribbean American Chamber of
Commerce and Industry, Inc. (CACCI)
and convening more than 600 small
business seminars to benefit the community,”
he said.
The Hastick Family said: “Dr. Roy A.
Hastick, Sr., was a man of great wisdom
with a spirit of giving and a calling to
help others.
“Everything he created and implemented
was always for the advancement
of his community,” the family
said. “His community was defined by
wherever he was at the moment. It is
only fitting that this intergenerational
community hub would bear his name.
“It is the hope of our family that
every individual who benefits from this
project will adopt the same attributes
which he espoused and give back to our
community, which will help to make it
better,” the family added. “Thank you,
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Commissioner/
CEO RuthAnne Visnauskas, Assemblywoman
Diana Richardson, Sen. Zellnor
Myrie and the Flatbush community for
remembering the life, work and legacy
of our dear husband, father and community
leader.”
Cuomo said Clarkson Estates will
be constructed on a parcel called “Site
L”, which is land currently owned by
Health Science Center at Brooklyn
Foundation.
