This year’s Twenty20 World
Cup, originally scheduled to be
held in India, will be played in
the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
and Oman from Oct. 17, the
International Cricket Council
(ICC) said last week, as India
struggles to curb a surge in
COVID-19 infections.
The ICC said the first round
of the tournament, comprising
the eight qualifying teams,
will now be split between
Oman and the UAE.
“Four of three teams will
then progress in the Super
T20s round where they will
join the eight automatic qualifiers,
” the ICC said in a statement.
The matches in the UAE will
be played in Dubai, Abu Dhabi
and Sharjah, while the Oman
Cricket Academy Ground is the
fourth venue.
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka Ireland,
Netherlands, Namibia,
Oman and Papau New Guinea
will vie to grab the four spots
and join the top eight teams in
the Super 12s stage.
West Indies is the defending
champion.
The UAE hosted the entire
2020 edition of the Indian Premier
League and will also be the
venue for the final phase of this
year’s IPL, which was suspended
in June due to the COVID-
19 crisis in India. Abu Dhabi
hosted the final leg of this year’s
Pakistan Super League.

CONCACAF said on Wednesday
that Martinique (population
374,973) will face off against
competition in the Gold Cup
that includes the United States
(population 331,449,281).
“Yet, Martinique has successfully
punched above its
population weight before,” said
CONCACAF, stating that Martinique’s
Kevin Parsemain, for
example, is on the list of alltime
top Gold Cup scorers from
the Caribbean.
With five overall goals (two
of them scored against the US),
Parsemain is tied with Jamaica’s
Darren Mattock for first
place, CONCACAF said.
“Though Parsemain is not
on the 2021 Gold Cup roster,
his example has no doubt
inspired the young members
of the squad who will have a

chance to prove themselves to
Head Coach Mario Bocaly,” it
said.
Bocaly is a Martinique native
who has coached several club
teams on the island and is,
thus, very familiar with the
majority of the players, CONCACAF
said.
“Certain hopefuls from
abroad, however, will no doubt
be looking to make an impression
on both the coach and the
competition itself,” it said.
CONCACAF said one of these
is Patrick Burner, the 25-yearold
defender who plays for
Nimes Olympique in Ligue 2,
France’s second division of club
competition.
“As a player abroad since
2013 on youth teams, Burner
has still to feature for Les Matinino,”
it said. “Burner may
ultimately play a key role, since
Martinique’s opening matchup
at the Gold Cup comes against
Canada, as it did in the 2019
version of the competition.
CONCACAF said most successful
runs in any tournament
begin with a good opening
game for teams.
In 2019, it noted that Martinique
did well in the opening
moments of play, holding
Canada scoreless for over a half
hour and generating their own
chances, often off corner kick
opportunities.
