HOLDER SETS SIGHT ON TEST LEGACY WI 9th spot in
By Azad Ali
The Jamaica Tallawahs Caribbean
Premier League (CPL)
franchise has stated that the
decision to drop Chris Gayle
ahead of the 2020 season was
just “business and cricketing
reasoning,” contrary to
what the hard-hitting Jamaican
Twenty20 specialist has
alleged.
Responding to a series of
YouTube videos in which Gayle
accused assistant coach Ramnaresh
Sarwan of having a
big part to play in the Tallawahs
releasing him from the
squad, the franchise said it
was disappointed by Gayle’s
comments.
It insisted that Sarwan did
not play a role in the decision
to part ways with the 40-yearold
batting star.
CPL said in a statement, the
truth is that this decision was
made collectively by the ownership
Caribbean L 28 ife, May 15-21, 2020
and management team,
which did not include Sarwan,
and based purely on business
and cricketing reasoning.
”The Tallawahs had a very
disappointing season in CPL
2019, where the team finished
last in the tournament. The
ownership and management
team has exercised its rights
in the selection of players in
the CPL 2020 for the betterment
of the team.”
Last week the St. Lucia
Zouks announced that Gayle
was joining the squad for the
CPL 2020 season.

Dujon, 63, now a respected cricket
commentator speaking on the Mason
and Guest radio program in Barbados
last week, wasn’t optimistic about
sports resuming at least not before
a vaccine is developed for the deadly
virus that has affected over three million
people worldwide.
“This has brought everything to
a halt. All the countries are being
affected but I guess the smaller ones
are being affected most in terms of
revenues primarily at this point,” he
said.
“It is difficult especially in light
of the fact that we basically don’t
know when we will get to a stage
when these activities can resume,”
he added.
Dujon said he doesn’t think there
is any cricket going to be played until
“we get back to a situation of normalcy
where people can gather.”
Cricket West Indies has already
curtailed its first-class season and
canceled its youth tournaments, while
the senior team’s tour to England in
May/June has been postponed.
“Economic collapse is a real fear
but at the same time in order to fight
it you cannot endanger the lives of
people. That would be irresponsible,”
the Jamaican said.
T20 rankings
However, the series win was only
the Caribbean side’s second in 10
outings, a run of form which had
led to their steady slide down the
table.
In fact, since their capture of the
Twenty20 World Cup in India four
years ago, West Indies has won just
four of 15 series, excluding one offmatches.
For their part, Afghanistan has
won its last bilateral series, including
a 2-1 verdict in a three-match
series against West Indies in India
last November.
Australia has climbed to the top
of the Twenty20 standings for the
first time since this format of the
game was introduced in 2011, with
England moving into second spot
and India third.
Pakistan, which spent the last
27 months at the top, has moved
to fourth.
The Twenty20 World Cup is
scheduled to be played in Australia
from Oct. 18 to Nov. 15 but could
be scrapped as the world remains
in lockdown because of COVID-19
outbreak.
unbeaten 202 to propel West Indies
to a crushing victory over England in
the opening Test at Kensington Oval,
Barbados last January.
In reaching triple figures for the
third time in his career, Holder
became the first West Indies number
eight to score a double century in
Tests and the first West Indies captain
since Brian Lara in 2004, to
score a double century against England.
Only the previous year, fast bowler
Holder had captured 33 wickets at an
average of 12.39- the best average in
a calendar for nearly a century. He
currently averages 32 with the bat
from 40 Tests and 26 with the ball.
Though Holder averaged 49 with
the bat and took 20 wickets at 17
apiece in Tests last year, he believes
there was still much improvement
needed.
