MILESTONE
Sells one million barrels on
international market
BY BERT WILKINSON
The Caribbean Community
headquarter nation of
Guyana has not only just become
one of the world’s newest
oil producers but is about
to sell its own first million
barrels of oil on the international
market this week.
The shipment that is expected
to be carted away by
the MV Cap Phillipe, chartered
by Shell Western Supply
and Trading Limited out
of Barbados. The company
late last year won the bid to
sell off the first three shipments
of Guyana’s portion of
oil that would be produced
by American supermajor
ExxonMobil and its partners,
Hess Oil of the US and
Nexen of China from an offshore
platform about 120
miles southeast of the capital.
The consortium has already
shipped its own consignment
of one million
barrels since production began
in earnest on December
20th, five years after Exxon
first declared world class deposits
of oil and gas offshore.
Total production since December
has reached 2.7 million
barrels as of mid February.
The oil is coming from
the Liza-1 field which turned
the region’s largest and most
resource rich nation into a
nation flush with oil but the
consortium is eyeing the development
of several other
very promising oil fields
that could take production
up to 750,000 barrels daily in
five years.
The latest developments
now mean that Guyana joins
Trinidad at about 80,000 per
day, Suriname, about 16,000
daily from onshore fields
across its western border
from Guyana and Barbados
at around 1,600, also from
onshore oil fields in the
center of the country as the
three producers in the bloc
of 15 nations. The Guyana
oil shout has led to a spike in

State continues to promote
census engagement
BY NELSON A. KING
Following the recent
launch of Gov. Andrew M.
Cuomo’s Census Council,
New York’s campaign to
make sure every New Yorker
is counted in the upcoming
2020 Census continued last
week with four conferences
across the state.
Cuomo’s offi ce said that
State offi cials moderated
panels in Buffalo, Rochester,
Syracuse and Long Island,
to inform counties and community
based organizations
on how to apply for available
State funding as well as best
practices to coordinate efforts
and resources to reach
at-risk and hard-to-count
communities.
The conferences also focused
on leadership and
messaging strategies to implement,
improving digital
literacy and opening up
places for individuals to fi ll
their Census online.
“We are committing signifi
cant resources to our efforts
to get a complete count
because the 2020 Census is
critical to the future of our
great state,” Cuomo said. “At
this critical time in the history
of this nation and this
state, we are going to get the
job done and make sure every
New Yorker is counted and
represented.”
“I am traveling across the
state raising awareness and
encouraging participation
in the 2020 Census as part of
our statewide Census conferences,”
said Lt. Gov. Kathy
Hochul. “This is a critical
time in our history, and we
must ensure a complete count
to receive our fair share of
federal funding and have the
representation we deserve in
Washington.
“We are working to make
sure all New Yorkers are
counted so no children go
hungry, no seniors have to
live without heat, and people
with disabilities have good
jobs,” she added. “We have to
