City pol call for
mayor’s removal MORE
De Blasi-no!
BY ROSE ADAMS
Sunset Park councilman Carlos
Menchaca introduced a resolution
into the Council calling on Gov.
Andrew Cuomo to remove Mayor
Bill de Blasio from offi ce, arguing
that the mayor’s unwillingness to
slash the NYPD’s budget prevents
meaningful police reform.
“New Yorkers have realized
that the Mayor represents the
single greatest obstacle to peace
and justice in New York City, and
to passing a fair and just people’s
budget,” Menchaca wrote in a Medium
post on June 18.
Should Cuomo heed the calls,
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams
would become the interim
mayor until January 2022.
The ask comes as critics have
blasted de Blasio for his response
to the George Floyd protests.
Following pressure to cut the
NYPD’s budget, de Blasio has
vowed to make some cuts — but resists
slashing the budget by $1 billion
as reformers have proposed.
De Blasio has rolled out a series
of police reforms — but Menchaca
blasted those as not going nearly
far enough.
“New Yorkers are demanding
nothing short of a complete reimagining
of public safety,” the
councilman wrote.

Two cops injured in crash in Bushwick
BY TODD MAISEL
Two police offi cers were injured
on June 18 as they were racing to
the scene of a shooting in Bushwick,
police say.
On their way to Cornelia Street,
offi cers from the 83rd Precinct
struck a pole near Grove Street and
Bushwick Avenue just after 11 pm,
offi cials said.
Emergency medical workers
took both of the injured offi cers to
nearby hospitals for treatment of
non-life-threatening wounds, according
to a Police Department
spokesperson.
Other cops responded to the
shooting, where they found an unidentifi
ed man shot in the arm. He
was taken to Elmhurst Hospital
where he was last reported in stable
condition.
There was no description of the
assailant and the victim was said
to be “uncooperative.”
Police sealed off Bushwick Avenue
to secure spent shells scattered
on the ground.
An investigation into the incident
remains ongoing.

on Saturday.
Parade organizers will work
with bars, restaurants, and other
venues across the globe to stage
the Aug. 29 “parade,” which will
feature costumes, prizes, and beloved
Mermaid Parade traditions,
one event organizer said.
“We’re going to have celebrity
guests, we’re going to do some
surprise stunts, we’re going to
have prizes,” said Mark Alhadeff,
a member of Coney Island USA,
the arts non-profi t that hosts the
parade.
The 38th annual Mermaid Parade,
originally slated for June
20, was postponed due to the novel
