As we put together the sixth issue of the magazine and recall the
kaleidoscopic rooms of this season’s Brooklyn Heights Designer
Showhouse, I am reminded of the abundant creativity and originality
of Brooklyn residents and their homes.
Many who live and work in the borough want to keep and
grow the things that make Brooklyn unique. Case in point: As
Brownstoner goes to press, the city is considering landmarking
five historic industrial buildings in Gowanus. It’s a start, but we
need to do more to preserve the unique character of this singular
neighborhood, residents said at the most recent hearing.
This issue is especially full of only-in-Brooklyn stories. We talk
to the Brooklyn chefs bringing back Downtown Brooklyn’s
storied Gage & Tollner restaurant, the founders of an East New
York theater company rooted in community experiences, and
three generations of artistic and entrepreneurial women in one
Bed Stuy family.
We hear from a new restaurateur about her passion for Persian
home cooking and speak with photographers Alex Webb and
Rebecca Norris Webb about their unique photographs of the
borough. Here’s to keeping Brooklyn special.
