20 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2015 HOTELS The Pape r Facto ry Hotel 37-06 36th Street, Long Island City (718) 706-8636 www.mundonewyork.com “I designed this corner in homage to Harlem,” smiles Gal Sela, the designer of the Paper Factory Hotel in Long Island City. He gestures to a stainless steel drum that has been capped with a glass tabletop, surrounded by low-sitting bucket seats in multiple colors. His pace quickens in excitement as he moves along the corridor. “Notice how these walls zigzag?” He points down the geometrically sophisticated hallway. “They were designed that way so there aren’t too many straight lines. Do you mind if we take the stairs? I just love these staircases.” Over the course of the next hour I am woven through this exotic hotel wonderland, and it is no surprise Fodor’s Travel has named it one of the best hotels in Queens. I would certainly take it a step further—this might be one of my favorite hotels, anywhere. The entire hotel is like a grownup wonderland. There’s a glowing red phone booth in the lobby, followed by miniature cars from some faraway amusement park. Polished concrete floors and vaulted ceilings are simultaneously industrial, yet warm. Each piece of furniture, artwork, and tchotchke carries with it a fascinating story from Sela’s world travels. In one room, I point out a wooden chair that I like. “That’s from a classroom in India,” he explains. “I travel the world myself collecting all of the things you see throughout the hotel.” The hotel boasts 122 unique rooms of varying sizes and capabilities, as well as over 15,000 sq. feet of event space for corporate events, weddings, and parties. Located just a block off of Northern Boulevard and E/M/R trains, it couldn’t possibly be more convenient for quick access to Manhattan—exceptionally ideal for anyone visiting the city.
