CHARACTERS 22 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2014 Interview + Photos LIZABETH NIEVES Carlos Detres is a photographer, writer and founder of e Whiskey Dregs online zine. I became interested in photography in high school. My dad got me a lm camera, and I used to do these really cheesy sculpture things. I was really into surrealism at the time, like every high school kid was, and I just used photography to capture that. I minored in photography in college. After college I couldn’t aord to do photography for a number of years, so I just didn’t do it. I loved being able to capture what was in my head. Just creating something and photographing it. at was it. Since then it has just developed. I love photography, it’s just great. Some of my early in€uences were Hans Bellmer, Man Ray, and I’d rather say painters than photographers. I was really into Magritte. I always connected to Bellmer’s work, using sexuality as protest, using eroticism as a way of expression. I think that’s very prevalent in my work, and a lot of what I do. I like sexuality being an expression. When I took the break from photography, I would write movies, I would write stories, I would write music, and I would DJ. To me photography and writing and djing were all tools to express the same thing. Photography is an important tool to me now, because I don’t need to rely on anyone. I could just go out and emote. I picked up a camera again when I saw how aordable DSLR’s were. I bought a Nikon D80, and it was awesome. I took it with me everywhere. I would incorporate it with my writing.
