Summer Streets
The sounds of honking horns will slowly
fade away to be replaced by the footsteps of
pedestrians for three Saturdays in August as
part of the annual Summer Streets initiative
in Manhattan. Long stretches of Lafayette
Street and Park Avenue will be closed to traffic
from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. to allow for the public
to ride bikes, walk, dance and wander the
streets with plenty of rest stops along the way
offering musical performances, a water slide, a
climbing wall, a zip line and more. The street
closures will take place on Aug. 3, 10 and 17.
Shakespeare
in the Park
A staple in New York since 1962, Shakespeare
in the Park has drawn morethan 5 million viewers
to its free outdoor shows in New York City Parks.
Each summer, the Public Theater presents two
Shakespearean shows with tickets distributed in
the park and other locations throughout the city.
This year, Kenny Leon will direct the comedy “Much
Ado About Nothing,” from May 21 to June 23. Then
the mood drastically changes with the political
drama “Coriolanus,” directed by Daniel Sullivan
from July 16 to Aug. 11. The season wraps up with a
special Public Works presentation of Hercules from
Aug. 31 to Sept. 1, directed by Lear deBessonet.

Dragon Boat
Festival
This event celebrating Chinese
culture sees 180 dragon boats
and their teams race to paddle
across the lake in Flushing
Meadows-Corona Park in
Queens. The colorfully decorated
boats hail from around the
world and are the center of the
festival, but offshore there are
plenty of traditional foods and
live entertainment, martial arts
demonstrations from the monks
of the Shaolin Temple, lion dance
performances, Chinese crafts
and childrens activities. Races
take place throughout the day on
Aug. 3 and 4.
