Museum Mile
Festival
Each year, the Museum
Mile Festival offers free
admission to New York’s
finest art collections during
extended evening hours at
the museums along Fifth
Avenue. El Museo del Barrio,
the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, the Cooper
Hewitt Smithsonian Design
Museum, the Jewish
Museum, Neue Galerie
and the Museum of the
City of New York will all be
participating in the June
11 event from 6 p.m. to 9
p.m. In addition to the art,
there are also plenty of
outdoor activities during the
block party, including face
painting, chalk drawing, live
music and more.
The Mermaid Parade
Also taking place in Coney Island, the Mermaid Parade is
an annual parade of sea creatures, antique cars, floats and
performers. Since 1983, this outdoor pageant has given New
Yorkers the chance to showcase their knowledge of ocean
mythology and wearable art. The spectacle draws crowds in the
thousands as the parade moves east along Surf Avenue from West
21st Street, turns south on West 10th Street and heads back west
on the boardwalk. The fun begins at 1 p.m. on June 22, so be sure
to arrive early to get a prime viewing spot.
Egg Rolls, Egg Creams and Empanadas Festival
Hosted by the Museum at Eldridge Street, this day-long festival
celebrates the many cultures of Chinatown through food, dance and
music. Chinese opera and acrobatics, klezmer performances, salsa and
