Whitney Biennial
Every two years, the Whitney Museum of American Art in
Greenwich Village, Manhattan invites artists from around the country
to display work that is on the pulse of the modern artistic movement.
Curators Jane Panetta and Rujeko Hockley visited artists for the past
year to determine which 75 would have their paintings, sculptures,
installations, film and video, photography, performances or sound
showcased in the exhibit. Introduced by the museum’s founder
Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1932, the Biennial is the longestrunning
exhibit in the country to document the latest developments
in American art. In this year’s installment, approximately 75 percent
of the artists are under the age of 40. Among the features artists are
Korakrit Arunanondchai, Elle Perez, Martine Syms, and the winner of
the Guggenheim’s 2018 Hugo Boss Prize, Simone Leigh. The exhibit
is on display from May 17 to Sept. 22.
