Fela! The Concert
Full of energy and upbeat rhythm, Fela! The Concert will hit the Ford
Amphitheater on the Coney Island Boardwalk in Brooklyn on July 26. With
his sensual, eclectic sounds, Fela Kuti is considered the founding father of
Afrobeat and one of the world’s most celebrated music legends. Set against
a canvas of projected images, the show features a live 10-piece band with
singers and dancers who bring life to Fela’s joyful style. Fela! The Concert also
features members of the original Broadway cast from the highly acclaimed
Tony Award winning production Fela! Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for the 8:00 p.m.

This unique show commemorates the 50th
anniversary of the Harlem Cultural Festival, which
took place in 1969 and featured legendary acts
such as Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, B.B. King,
Sly & the Family Stone, Jesse Jackson, Gladys
Knight and more. The event is curated by Neal
Ludeveg, a founder of the original festival, musical
direction by Igmar Thomas (who has collaborated
with Wyclef Jean, Mos Def, Lauryn Hill and Nas),
co-hosted by independent rapper Talib Kweli,
and features performances by jazz trumpeter
and singer Keyon Harrold and a number of special
guests. The show kicks off at 6:00 p.m. on Aug. 17
at Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem.
