Dnata performs unique
6,000 piece operation
Antonov freighter loaded with PPE for essential workers
JFK ground handler
AIRPORT VOICE, JUNE 2020 7
dnata stepped up to the plate
by handling a recent 6,000
piece PPE flight destined for
health care facilities around
the region. The freight was
carried from overseas by the
Antonov AN-124 freighter
which is one of the largest
aircraft in the world.
On board were 6,000 loose
cartons of personal protection
equipment that had to
be custom handled by dnata.
Usually large shipments like
this are on pallets then moved
by a hi-lo machine. In this
case dnata had to be creative
and set up a special manual
dual line conveyor belt system
which started in the aircraft
cargo bay and ended in
the cargo department of large
truck for direct delivery to
a warehouse then on to regional
distribution.
The trucks had to rotate
by delivering to the warehouse
and returning to accommodate
the volume of
products.
Over 20 dnata workers
were on hand to manually
handle the large shipment.
The JFK Customs and Border
Antonov N124 is 2nd largest cargo aircraft in the world.
Protection team was on hand
for documentation and compliance.
The whole operations took
hours. The JFK dnata team is
headed by Francis Otto who
is experienced in cargo handling
and worked closely with
this dnata team to devise an
efficient and productive way
of moving these thousands of
cartons.
The Antonov remained
overnight then left for its return
trip to Europe for its
next mission. PPE comes down the conveyor belt.
