Bridging the Comm gap
Speed Cargo Flow at JFK
Cargo truck wait times are a
chronic problem at JFK, costing
trucking companies and container
freight stations serving the airport
millions of dollars in
lost productivity and
other costs. Increased
volumes of critical
air cargo coming in
to combat COVID-19,
and limited handling
capacity, have compounded
and exposed
this every-day problem
at the airport.
Truckers handling imports
are at the bottom of the supply chain,
but have full responsibility for recovering
cargo from the airlines and
ultimate delivery to the consignee.
They suffer most as they sit idle, with
costly assets tied up to perform what
would be a relatively quick task if
cargo is ready to pick up at time of arrival.
They often make multiple attempts
to recover the same shipment,
spending hours waiting in line, and
are subject to penalty fees when
freight cannot be picked up within
the prescribed time window.
There is no excuse for this.
Leading cargo airports around
the world have implemented systems
that enable communications and
collaboration among airlines, cargo
handlers, customs brokers, and
freight forwarders; such a system is
needed at JFK. We the KAAMCO
Cargo Ops Committee have envisioned
a system, “JFK Cargo View”,
to reduce truck congestion and wait
times at the airport, and the business
case and plan to develop,
deploy and implement
it. With support
from the JFK air cargo
community and the
Port Authority, it can
quickly become a reality.
As we compete with
other airports and integrated
carriers in a just-intime
world, a seamless system
with rapid communications, cooperation
and accountability will help
ensure survival of our segment of
the air cargo industry. And it will
benefi t everyone at JFK, in the surrounding
community, and the NY/
NJ region. In the meantime, cargo
business will continue to be lost as it
is diverted to more effi cient airports
The time to make this happen
is NOW. JFK is our gateway to the
world; we must keep it fast, fi t, and
competitive. JFK-based trucking
and container companies will attest
to this, and support our JFK Cargo
View vision.
